Several speakers who addressed the meeting said they strongly object to the presence in the area of a centre with video lottery terminals. The Shubenacadie band, which owns about 54 hectares of land in the district, intends to open a gambling centre with machines leased from the province. “We want to be good neighbours,” said David Nevin, manager of economic development for the band. He added that his organization can do what it wants since the native band owns the property. Aside from local folks, anti-gambling advocates have said another video lottery operation is not what this province needs. Critics point to the personal and social troubles that problem gambling creates. Nathan Sack, the Shubenacadie band’s operations director, said the band has an addiction services program, as does the provincial government. Contrary to previous media reports, the gambling building isn’t opening today. The meeting was told opening day is weeks away. Dozens of people attended the session in the firehall to hear from band officials and Hammonds Plains’ elected representatives. Some attendees urged the band to consult more with residents and pursue economic development that doesn’t include VLTs. Residents heard the gambling centre is a windowless structure with white walls and fluorescent lights. It’s divided between smokers and non-smokers, housed under one roof, and will not have a kitchen or be licensed to serve alcohol. More than half the gambling space is for smokers. One longtime neighbour said before the meeting that householders in the area weren’t given enough information about the gaming house, and they’re upset that it’s a stone’s throw from an elementary school. “All the information is coming out in dribs and drabs,” Catherine Lynds told The Chronicle Herald. “The place is scheduled to open (relatively soon), and there was just news that got out today that, originally, they were approved for 45 (VLTs) … and now they’ve been approved for an additional 100.” Lynds said a lot of people in the area don’t know much about the Shubenacadie band’s project. She said gaming buildings went up perhaps two weeks ago and looked to observers like they were going to be storage units. “There’s no community support” for the band’s gambling centre, Lynds said. “Everybody is outraged.” The Shubenacadie band is the second-largest Mi’kmaq band in the province, according to its website, and has more than 2,500 registered members. About 1,200 band members live on-reserve in the Indian Brook First Nation. A band staffer said recently that the gaming centre in Hammonds Plains is a potential money-maker. Band spokesmen have said it’s hoped revenue from the VLTs would help improve housing at Indian Brook and other things. Coun. Matt Whitman (Hammonds Plains-St. Margarets) told the meeting the gambling site will be a place where players’ cash will likely vanish. He said a lot of people using the centre “are going to lose their money, just like they’d lose their money down at the Halifax casino on the waterfront,” adding, “and I feel sorry for those folks. That’s why it’s a bad deal.”
